newbie questions on symlinks

Hello All:

I'm just now reinstalling RH (7.3) on my box after finishing some stuff, and am trying to dust off the cobwebs to the very little I know.

For example, how do I:

create a link between a new install (say of Netscape) and an icon of that install on the desktop? For that matter, how do I put an icon of that install on the desktop?

Thanks.

please pick a suitable forum for this, as the name should suggest "LinuxQuestions.org Member Intro" is only for saying "hi". moved to "Linux - newbie"

you also have not provided much information about your system, inparticular what Desktop Environment you are using. KDE, Gnome, XFce or one of a million others?

I can certainly tell you it's not symlinks you want to be looking at though, they are too low level for what you are asking. it will be an option in a menu somewhere no doubt.
