Newbie Question: Mac with Linux Os

Hi guys,

This is my 1st time posting in the forum... I'm quite new to Linux.
I have a mac book pro and have the mac os installed. Do many people in here use Linux os with there mac and if so, which version? Also, does it run well on the mac?

Thanks for any feedback on this.

Regards,

Aaron

Hi and welcome to LQ!

I run Debian on my MacBookPro (standalone). It runs rather well and I'm not planning on switching back to OS-X.

You say you are new to Linux; If that is the case then I would advise you to wait until you know more about Linux before putting it on your Mac. Although it has become easier to install Linux on an Intel Based Mac, you still need to tinker with the system to get everything to work.

If you want to get familiar with Linux and you only have a MacBookPro to play with I would advise to install a virtual machine on OS-X and start running Linux from there. VirtualBox is free and available for OS-X

BTW: There are sites that describe how to install Linux on a Intel based Mac's. Search for Linux on macintel.

Newbie using Linux os on macbookpro.

Nice, thanks druuna and Ztcoracat!

Thanks for the advice drunna! I'll look into Debian version as well. It's good to know your happy
running Linus on your mac, which is something i definitely want to try. Good to know I'm not the
only one out there who's doing this. I'm doing it partly because we use Linux at work, and partly
to get the best out of my mac. Yes, I agree, for starters I'll be having it as
a dual os with osx.

Thanks for the links Ztcoracat! That's exactly what I need right now. Looks like I'm gonna
be busy this weekend :D

Thanks for your help and feedback guys,

Aaron.
