newbie question, i have searched


hi,

how do i shutdown X ? when my linux boots it automatically opens up X but i want command prompt only to play with showkey , but showkey says it wont run with X. i have search but i must be using the wrong search parameters cos i cant find a thing on temporariliy shutting down X.

press CTRL+ALT+F1
log in as root
type
**
init 3
**
this is the "third state" of *nix, where X is not (yet while boot) started.
To restart X type
**
init 5
**

You can just hit ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a command prompt, there's no need to shut down X.

ctrl-alt-f7 will get you back to X.

You can run another X server (another desktop login) on VT8 if you so wish, and so on.
