Good day everyone.I just recently installed redhat 7.0, and I am facing quit a few problems with it.As they are a few in number I will describe them in order.
First I will describe my system.I have a pentium 2 450 MHZ,with a tnt2 m64 32 mb, a creative vibra sound card,128 mb ram, and a 33.6k isa modem.

1)GNOME:
========
When I installed redhat 7.0 for the first time I selected graphical login and selected gnome,but when the system booted for the first time gnome failed to run,and gave a message saying a process has been murdered mysteriously.But second time around I installed it again by selecting kde and it runs fine.I have also tried enlightenment and window maker which run fine as well.So why isnt gnome running?

2)Applications not running from inside kde:
===========================================
the second problem is that I want to get on the net through linux so that I can get applications utilities and learn the os properly.but I cant configure my dial up connection as I have tried to run dial up network application from inside kde and it doesnt run after clicking on the application name from the k menu.There are alot of other applications which are not running from the K menu, should this be happening and if so then what is the use of a graphical gui?I have run modemtool from the consol but how to configure dial up connection through consol?

3)sound card not working:
=========================
the creative sound card vibra is not supported but can it be configured manually? and if so would it get damaged by doing so?

4)Quit a few gui's which one should I use:
==========================================
I have ran 4 guis upto now and all look very pleasing,but which one should I run and is the most benificial one?
I shall be thankfull to get replies to these as I want to use linux but am restricted....

Is Gnome now installed? If not, install it again (kpackage e.g. as root) and do a "switchdesk-gnome" under kde. Is it working now? If not, edit your /etc/inittab and change the default-runlevel to "id:3:initdefault:". Then edit your
".Xclients-default" in your users home-dir and change it to
"exec gnome-session". Okay, reboot your box and after you logged in, type "startx". Is it working now? If not, what failure-messages do you see on the terminal?

?????
What do mean? You have tried "K --> Internet --> DialupConfiguration"? And it don't work?
You can hack /etc/ppp/... and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts by hand if you want to.
Sorry, need more info to help!
What other apps aren't running? There are some apps that can only be started with root-permissons! And they won't start without giving you a failure message!

I don't know the crative vibra. "sndconfig" didn't found your sound-card? If not, you might have to rebuild your kernel and add the right modules for your card.
Sorry.

Just use the one you like most! I prefer KDE, but Gnome is also nice. It also depends on your hardware-equipment. FVM runs even on a 486. But as soon you get deeper into LINUX, you will find yourself starting a GUI and then opening a lot of shells and .....forget the graphics stuff :-))))

hope this might help you a little
