newbie needs SATA help

I have an ASUS motherboard with promise fasttrack 378 sata controller. I have two hard drives and my plan was to use one for windowsXP (done and working) and the other for Redhat. When I try to install and I get to the partition screen, it doesn't detect my harddrives and aborts the installation. I know there is alot of info about Linux and Promise being hard to configure, and what people did to get it to work, but the ones I've read are too technical for me to follow. I have downloaded Linux Promise controller from ASUS' website, but don't have the slightest idea of how to install it before installing the Redhat (8.0).

First off, why are you installing Red Hat 8.0? That is ANCIENT, and probably why it doesn't support your drives.

Secondly, the promise controller is a RAID controller... you seem to be wanting to hook your drives up completely independent of each other.

Specifically which motherboard do you have? I've got a P4C800-E Deluxe with that same promise controller and I've used a SATA drive on the ICH5 controller on the board.

I have the promise set to ide. I have A8V deluxe. I got the Redhat 8.0 from a friend. Tell me what to get, and I will go get it.
I heard the latest suse is cool and supports 64 bit processors. Let me know, Because I need the info. Thanks!

The latest SuSE does have a 64 bit version and would most likely have much better support for your SATA drive.

SuSE 9.3 Network Install

http://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/9.3/boot/boot.iso

print that path to the /9.3

Burn boot.iso to a disk.

Boot with it.

adjust screen (F2) adjust slp to ftp, use that same one you got boot.iso from

Follow all the other junk

If you have special issues, let us know. We'll help 'til we drop.

Putting SuSE 9.3 on a PII 233 64MB ram and a 1.6GB HDD is like taking a really classy, hot babe to McDonalds. If you don't ask for much, you'll get something. Otherwise, you'll get nothing. if you can put up with a lot of whining, she might do it again sometime. She'll be late, though
