newbie need help, can't play DVD

Hi,

I can play my audio CDs and also see Data CDs, but when I try to see contents of my DVD or play DVD thru ogle, I get the error :

[psethi@localhost ~]$ cd /mnt/cdrom
/mnt/cdrom: Input/output error.

[psethi@localhost ~]$ ogle -u cli /mnt/cdrom
Debug[ogle_nav]: Opening DVD at "/mnt/cdrom"
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.6 for DVD access
libdvdread: Couldn't find device name.
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
vm: faild to read VIDEO_TS.IFO

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Pradeep

Well, first off, you cannot mount/view an audio, DVD or media type cd to view the contents.

I'm not familiar with Ogle but have you tried another player like mplayer to test it or try? Did you compile and install Ogle or did it come preinstalled?

On their FAQ the mention an error something like this, might have a read of it there. http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/faq.shtml

acid_kewpie 05-11-2003 11:34 AM

you are trying to use the mountpoint as the dvd itself, which is wrong, apps like this aren't fstab aware.... so use the /dev/hdc block device, however that is done in ogle...

Thanks for the reply, but when I try to use /dev/dvd, it gives error 'Could not open device'

psethi@localhost ~]$ ogle -u cli

Debug[ogle_vout]: CLK_TCK: 100
Debug[ogle_nav]: Opening DVD at "/dev/dvd"
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.6 for DVD access
libdvdread: Could not open device with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading
vm: faild to open/read the DVD

when I use /dev/hdc, same error :

[psethi@localhost ~]$ ogle -u cli /dev/hdc
Debug[ogle_vout]: CLK_TCK: 100
Debug[ogle_nav]: Opening DVD at "/dev/hdc"
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.6 for DVD access
libdvdread: Could not open device with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/hdc for reading
vm: faild to open/read the DVD

When I run xine, and then click open disc..., it just crashes ...

any suggestions ?

acid_kewpie 05-11-2003 11:52 AM

well IS that your dvd drive? i'm only assuming it is... also try with mplayer (actually that probably won't make any difference, as it's all using the same gubbins in the background, libdvdread)

prad2000 05-11-2003 12:00 PM

I have two drives, 1st is DVD, and second is a CD RW, right now, I am only trying to set up 1st one to play audio CDs and to watch DVD.

I think it is the drive, because a), when I play audio CDs in that drive, it shows /mnt/cdrom in kscd.

sorry , but I am totally newbie for devices and mounting and might be doing something totally wrong.

here is my dmesg :

Assuming you have automount turned on, install all 5 required packages for ogle, then put a dvd in the drive and run ogle (no switches).

You can get the 5 installs and the install order for mandrake 9.1 << here >>

enjoy.

with me /dev/dvd is just a symlink to /dev/cdrom...
