Yes Linux is fully functional w/out a Windows or Apple OS installed.
Yes Linux supports flash and Java.
Yes linux supports USB 2.0 ports.
I would suggest for a newbie Mandriva Linux.

KDE is a desktop window manager not a distro.

1) It's easier to install by itself, so yeah.
2) Yes. Java is opensource so it's for linux and I'm 99% sure that there is flash for linux.
3) Yes, if not better than windows.

+ no viruses, spyware, adware, no crashes, fast and a lot more.

But how would I tell it to boot Linux? Would I get Linux on CD and tell it to boot from the CD Drive, and then when it is operational, copy the Linux to the hard drive and tell it to boot from there? I'm just guessing if it sounds stupid...

Yea, you should leave your questions even if they have been answered so that others that come along later can learn.

Java is NOT open source and yes there is a Flash player for Linux from Macromedia. There are projects underway to make an open source JAVA VM including Kaffe, GCJ and possible something from the Apache foundation (http://developers.slashdot.org/artic...36234&from=rss). None of these is near complete yet unforutunately.
