Should i know unix commands to operate Linux.

I love linux but my lover seems to be at unfathomable distance.

Pls help. I am in preschool

My PC Intel P4 HT(Hyper Threading)(Model : D865 GBF), 2.5 GHrtz, 256 MB RAM, 40GB HDD,

Sound card Graphic Card downloaded for the processor from Intel website.

Need A to Z help to come to all your guyz level. Either books or website or a combination of both.

I am now on xp pro. Using office application, hearing music, using lot of free downloads from CNET and having so many utilities and so I am not a down under working guy but a surface guy. Linux seems to be a rugged one and trouble free compared to windows. So an viable alternative.

Now where from and what should I learn to become a linuxite.

well you can do all that in Linux...you probably won't be able to use CNET freebies but you don't really need that on Linux. You can start by using a Live-CD linux distro that will give you a feel of Linux. It won't install anything on your system but just run off the CD or if you really want to jump in, go to www.distrowatch.com...download any linux distro and install it.

If you want to learn Linux your should start using Linux. I recommend starting with a live CD like Knopix or ubuntu. This way you don't harm any of your Windows info. I found by using it I learned it best. As you find things you can't do you research on Google and ask questions here.

I alredy got a feel of it and love it. I am having from an Indian Distro a small timer one by name openlx. Fedora based and GNOME desktop. But I have problem like sound card not working, i recently had a problem of net not connecting. Before i used to access net vide xp as well as linux. One fine day when it did not work the cable guy told not to use linux for net and use only xp. So to get through all these I thought I should get a bit under the hood to manage on my own. I love Linux for its speed. Also I am unable to install downloaded utilities like Adobe, BUcket(I am a addicted onenote user) from CNET.

you shouldn't have problems finding alternatives to those or just running them in wine. it is a very good learning experience and i highly reccomend ubuntu dapper drake. it is a good distro for beginners and google is our friend as well as LQ is our main source of info and how to's. good luck and keep us updated please. by the way, welcome to lq.
