Newbie in Linux pain
 

Hello

I have a mixed Linux /Win32 network and here’s what it looks like:


Currently I have a broadband connection running to my ‘Smooth Wall’ red NIC – Then I have my ‘Smooth Wall’ green NIC (192.168.x.1) running to a ‘D-Link’ switch. From the ‘D-Link’ switch I run my network (192.168.x.100 – 110), the ‘E-Smith’ server (192.168.x.2) and a ‘D-Link’ WAP (192.168.x.99).

I currently use the E-Smith as a storage server for my internal network and ideally I would like to make the data fully available internally yet safe from the web.


Everything currently works

What I would like to do is to run a website, mail server and FTP from my E-Smith and allow limited remote connection to it.

The E-Smith is set up with all the above listed services running.

• What I need to know is what ports on the 'Smooth wall' do I have to open and how?
• How do I port forward from the Smooth Wall to the E-Smith?
• What are the best ports to forward to on the E-Smith and why?
• What are the advantages of using a third ‘Orange DMZ’ NIC in my Smooth Wall and what is the best way to make it effective?


Any help would be great - I like to dig... so even a point in the correct direct would be excellent.

You might want to start by taking a look at /etc/services which gives a list of the ports for the various services you want to run. These are the ones you will have to open in your firewall. As for configuring your Smooth Wall, you should look in the user manual as to how to set up port forwarding. I am assuming Smooth wall is a firewall/router. You should be able to set port forwarding to whatever network or IP you want.
