Newbie Here . . . Having Problems with Apache Server Config and DNS.

Hi all. First off, I'm glad I came across this board. I've been contemplating for sometime to get into web hosting and have setup a novice network in which to learn.

I have three computers connected to a router with a dsl modem for connection. One of the pc's is just for simple web surfing with one static IP. The second is going to be my primary DNS server and I also have windows xp loaded on a smaller drive on that pc.

The third pc has Apache server on it and will be my web server and act as a secondary dns if that's possible. Now I've toyed with Linux in the past but it's been awhile so I'm still very green. I need some guidance on how to configure the dns and web server. Eventually I'm going to be designing a site and I want to host it myself. I have Red Hat 8.0. Thanks in advance.

Welcome!

Note: I don't have RH 8.0, so the directories in your system may be different. Sorry.

Default Apache configuration will work, you can just run it and see (default directory for your website: /var/www.

DNS (bind) should work with default configuration, too. But it's a good idea to write your own one, or just change the names. The main config is in /etc/named.conf (the rest should be in /var/named). Secondary DNS doen not come 'out-of-the-box', but it can be done (maybe after you have the primary one running?).

DNS-Howto :http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html (good, with nice examples).

Thanks for the reply. Is the one static IP that I initially received from my ISP will be sufficient for a web server and dns server on two different boxes?

It will be enough for Apache and one DNS server (even on different machines, because you can do port forwarding). There will be a problem with the second DNS. With one IP it's rather undoable.

Okay will it be feasible to just get away with one dns? Initially I only want to host one web site. Eventually I will attain another IP so I can setup a secondary dns.

To host a domain you need primary DNS and one or two secondary DNSes (usually two). You need to find someone to host a secondary DNS for you.

Thanks for the response Mara. I'll be contacting my ISP once the site is designed to setup a secondary DNS. Thanks again for your insight.
