Unhappy Newbie having problems with USB Modem under Knoppix

Hi

I'm new to Linux, and I'm having problems getting life out of my Sagem F@st 800E3 USB ADSL Modem. I'm running Knoppix 3.9 Live CD.

So far, I've managed to get my hands on some drivers for it; eagle-usb-utils_2.1.1-1_i386.deb and eagle-usb-data_2.1.1-2_all.deb.

I've installed both these packages using the KDE Install package tool, and I've got as far as configuring my account details, then it just stops with a vague error message whilst installing the modules.

Also, in USBView, the modem is still listed as "Unknown Device", although I do get both Power and ADSL lights, meaning that the modem reports all is well.

I've seen similar horror stories about this modem and Linux all over the Internet, and I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck with Knoppix?

Thanks!

What's the error message? Copy it here. Also, look to /var/log/messages. Are there log messages about your modem? For USB device you should have at least all connect/disconnect operations shown.

As far as I can recall, it simply failed while installing the package (Result=1), although there was a message, something like "Error xxxxxx", next time I'm in Knoppix I'll take a look.

Like others I am a complete newcomer to the world of Knoppix. However I have been able to successfully get the Sagem 800 ADSL modem to connect to Tiscali in the UK. I did it by using the download file and instructions on the official Sagem site.
My problem now is that following the instructions although I can get it working one time at installation time, even though I then save the My Configuration file, it is not actually working for the next time that I login.
It does save my account and password details. I guess that I am missing a very important step! Can someone help me here please??
The main Sagem steps in the instructions are to download a "tar" file, and then unpack it to a temp directory. Then to change directory eagle-usb/ .. followed by "ll"
Next steps are application of a patch, automatic configuration, make, make install, eagleconfig and finally startadsl.

I am nearly there! Where am I going wrong? Very frustrating!
