newbie

Hi guys, I’m a newbie. To Linux. What version would you recommend for me? I’m converting my Windoes2000 computer after a fatal virus hit the program.
IDK much about it but I heard its possible to make Linux look like windows programs, is it actually possible?

If you are planning to try out Linux, you are going to have to get rid of that mindset or just wipe your hard drive from the infected Windows installation and just re-install Windows. LINUX IS NOT WINDOWS, WINDOWS IS NOT LINUX. You may be able to create a desktop appearance with a distro like the previous poster linked to that may have a "WINDOWS LOOK" (the KDE Desktop has been compared to Windows in appearance by some), but that is where the comparison will end. Linux is built from a UNIX background uses a completely different file structure, and even though it can be 90% so, it is not a completely "point and click" operating system. I would strongly recommend that you try out a LiveCD like Ubuntu or Kubuntu, or one of any of the dozens available. That way you can try Linux without actually installing it.

Hope this helps

I would recommend avast antivirus for windows. :)

If you go for Ubuntu, I would strongly recommend to go with the previous release: 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) until the worst bugs are eliminated from 8.04.
I've been very surprised with PCLinuxOS. I've only spent a day using it, but I've already set up everything I needed.
It's also uncompromisingly ugly by default, so you should feel right at home. :P

Go take a look at Distrowatch. Lots of info there on various distros.

I personally recommend PCLinuxOS for newbies.

Here's a good comparison article: http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

Good tutorial: http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz

As mentioned above, most Linux distros (these days come with a GUI interface (like MS-Win), but underneath they are significantly different, which is one of the reasons viruses are not much of a problem.

As they are all free, work your way down the list here http://distrowatch.com/ until you find one you like.

I recommend PCLOS too, it's simple and fast. Give it a try.

The original poster would be wise to listen to everything that was said above...
