Newbie

I have been pleasantly suprised by my recent switch to Linux (Suse) and cannot believe I have not investigated this option a long time ago. I have a few Newbie questions that I hope someone can help me with.

1. I have noticed that many programs do not have uninstallers and appear to run off a single directory. In old DOS days when you removed the directory you removed the program and all was great, is this true in Linux for (not all) command line programs or programs without uninstallers? I have yast if you have any suggestions.

2. Could you recommend a good Linux manual?

3. Could you recommend a good Linux program site (I've been to Tucows)?

Thank you.

a great book here:

and also check out:

as far as removing programs...just fire up yast, choose "install/remove" software, and it will list all the programs installed on your machine...you can add or remove things there.

suse uses rpm's for packages...so they're relatively easy to work with...

unfortuatly, this is not the case in any *nix distro that i am aware of, however, some programs do have a --uninstall bash command that will remove itself from the box - i recommend Peter Nortons book on Linux, it takes you step by step thru installation, learning the commands, to installing X all the way up to rewriting the kernel...it literally teachs you up to a advanced intermidiate level
