Newb Getting into Linux can't use mouse!

I have a PS/2 Optical Mouse, and it does not work.

I'm working off the Live CD (5.10) (to see if Linux/Ubuntu is for me).

It boots up fine, but when I get to the main screen my mouse cursor doesn't move, however when I Left-click it, the cursor heads to the upper right, and the only thing I can use is the calendar. Please help me with this problem as I can't do anything else.

P.S. Will all my data be DELETED if I feel like making the jump from Windows XP (what I'm posting this on) to Linux/Ubuntu?

You should backup your data so you don't have to worry about losing it. But yes you will lose it when you partition you hard drive unless you have free space that linux can go on.

And my mouse problem?

How is your mouse connected, USB or PS/2? I have never used the
Ubuntu Live CD, does it have current logs in /var/log?

As for the partitioning: there are ways of resizing and adding a
partition in a non-destructive manner - to say that partitioning
equals data loss doesn't necessarily hold true these days. There's
ntfsresize and QPartEd, for instance, or commercial products a la
partition magic.

Cheers,
Tink
