New usb ralink 3072 adapter will not start in ubuntu 8.10

Hello to you all I have been using ubuntu 8.10 for over a year and have recently upgraded my huawei modem ubuntu will not recognise my new modem which has wireless capability so I went and got this new usb wireless adapter to connect using the wireless, I have followed the trouble shooting and have the windows drivers installed all ok but it will not enable the device I am at a total loss how to make it do what I need, I will say I am very thick when it comes to using the code to do anything and yet I build pc's and repair them for a hobby O im 54 years of age so please give detailed instructions for me to cure this problem.

I thamk you all in advance Ron.

just open a terminal paste in the commands then copy/ paste the output in your response (please use [code] tags so it is easier to read).

i did a search for '3072 Ralink linux'.

it seems you need to somehow compile and install a driver module called rt2800usb.
maybe from this site: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/rt2800usb

can you show me the output of lsmod and see if a sudo modprobe rt2800usb will work.

i dont use ubuntu nor do i have this card so hopefully there wull be instructions when you dl the firmware for your specific card and distribution.

re: ralink 3072

I don't have experience with Ubuntu, but have had similar experience with Trisquel, an Ubuntu/Debian based distro. I recently installed a d-link rt3070 chipset wireless adapter, and found this link useful:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1289917

You do need to download the driver software/kernel module file from ralink at this site:
http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2

Download the RT3070USB(RT307x) file. You will be asked for your name and e-mail address by ralink before you can download the file.

You will also need to install your kernel-source, linux-headers for your kernel, and build-essential from your package manager (Synaptic package manager is used on Trisquel and Debian). It should not be necessary to recompile your kernel. Since I didn't have an internet connection on the machine with the adapter, I downloaded on a different computer, saved to a flash drive, and copied to the Desktop of the computer with the adapter.

Untar the downloaded file according to the instructions on the Ubuntu forum, or use your archive manager (file-roller) to unpack the file.

Open the README_STA_usb file for installation instructions. The ralink instructions will say RT2870 instead of RT3070 (or RT3072), but the procedure is the same. The instructions are not very well written, and
I suggest fully reading the ubuntuforums thread to get a good idea of what you need to do, especially the post on blacklisting kernel modules. That was what was necessary for me to do to get my adapter working. Otherwise, even if you have the ralink module installed correctly, your system will still try to load the default modules (rt2x00usb, rt2x00lib, rt73usb, etc.).

Good luck.
