New Ubuntu user - software questions - help!
Hi,
I have two questions regarding Ubuntu. I have ditched Windows and have made the move. I'm trialling it on my laptop so that I can get used to it, before I put it on my desktop. 1. Which anti-virus software is free and recommended? 2. FTP software needed that will allow me to drag and drop files? I use CuteFTP at the moment(on desktop). Many thanks. Puzzle |

Welcome to the Linux world. As to anti-virus software... A virus which will impact a Linux machine is VERY rare. A Windows virus will not infect a Linux machine. However, if you interact with Windows users - email, exchanging files etc. you might want to scan files so that you do not inadvertently pass on an infection from one Windows user to another.
I would recommend looking at clamav and tkclam (which is a gui front end to use clamav.) Have a look on-line about these products and feel free to post back if you need assistance to install and run them. Ken |

Welcome to the forum :) To expand a bit on what 273 has said, in most cases, an antivirus program is not needed for Linux as the vast majority of malware is written for Windows, not Linux or Mac. However, if you still find you need or desire one, you can use ClamAV, which should be available in the repositories using the Synaptic package manager. There is additional information here which should be useful. Information about other free AV's for Linux can be found here. and here, although some links in the latter are no longer functioning. I would also avoid Comodo at the moment as there seems to be an issue with missing dependencies at the moment. :( Regards... |
