How about downloading the live cd? What could be more instructive than giving it a try?

Why are you doing something on Ubuntu 5.04 when that was released several years ago

Ubuntu 5.04 is not supported any more, I would suggest you use the latest, or a new version of ubuntu because you will have alot of problems

It's still old. The first digit is the year and the second number is the month. So 5.10 was release in October of 2005. I believe the current version is 8.04 (April 2008). A lot has changed since 5.10...

The question is how familiar with Ubuntu you are?The best way to know it would be to get the latest version and to start using it.
What are you traying to acomplish? If it's just to show the difference betwen Windows and GNU/Linux distributions in a point and click way,by using that old Ubuntu distro, then that's not good.Do you want to show them how it all works, but not in a tehnical manner, then what's the open source all about,etc.etc.Please give us more informations.

The reason why I need to know all this is because my teacher gave us an assignment to make up 3 assignments that our classmates can do on Ubuntu. And I am not all that familiar with it. can you do coding/programming on it? if so what/where is it?

That sounds like a perfect assignment for your classmates right there. Have them figure-out if Ubuntu can be used for programming, and what programming tools does it include.
