I am Maria who came across Linux in university syllabus and quite loved it.Hope I will get to learn here Linux. How to become master in Linux can some body suggest some fast ways to do the same?I want to learn Linux Very fast.

Download a few LiveCDs from various distro's. ( www.distrowatch.com ) Pick one you like and start using it :).

There's a lot of information on the internet, as well there is a lot of information just using the distro's (the man pages).

You learn the most and best by just doing everything in terminal. Though using the GUI is easier. If you have any questions, please make sure you do your homework before you ask them. Most people like solid specified questions, rather than questions asked because someone is too lazy to look for anything themselfs.

the shortcuts and crash course would be

a) evaporate Windows

b) install every major distro (ARCH, Debian, Slackware, Gentoo, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Fedora, etc) to your hard drive

c) use only linux everyday

Sorry, wasn't saying you are lazy. I was just trying to warn you for what might happen if you post something which makes you seem to be lazy.

Please note that being a true expert requires years and years of practice (if you want to master most of Linux). I don't know how much time you have and what you want to learn. Without goals you'll never know when you will be an expert.

Why on earth mark giving me lectures i don't know.Thank you all for the suggestions.Now can some one tell me how to install Linux.Can some one give me steps?Please dont give me lectures but give me the steps.

Well, big fat books, wikis, handbooks (Arch, Gentoo), forum threads... Lots of reading and practicing. You really need to practice. 'Cause if you don't, you won't be able to remember things. Good luck with that!

Hi thank-you for the reply but i am reading first then i will practice.My knowledge is if your theory is strong the you don't have problem in doing practicals.So some one please help me.

Steps for installing Linux

1. Download Linux
2. Burn to CD/DVD
3. Put CD/DVD into drive
4. Boot computer
5. Follow instructions on screen

That's it. You can find the different distros of Linux at their different websites. Distrowatch can point you to them, per the link in the first post. If you look at their websites, you'll also find installation instructions.

You may not be lazy but you are a nuisance.

Mark isn't lecturing you. He's trying to (very politely I might add) tell you that we're not here to give you step by step teaching. At LQ we believe in helping people to help themselves. We don't give "crash courses" - pay your university or some other institution to do that for you.

Download a few distro's, do some research and install these. Thereafter start trying to do little things and build your way up to more complex tasks. There is no way to learn Linux Very Fast . Like anything in life it takes time to build experience and become like the Gurus you'll find here at LQ. Lastly your statement that good theory equals good practical skill is flawed. Theory gives you the foundations for subject matter; practicing using the basic theory you've learnt; with the help of colleagues/research is what will make you an expert.

What Mark1986 possibly meant was "framing a query with the correct choice of words "is vital for the site members to answer! O.K,you don't want lectures and i respect that! Here's how you go-->type in Google search --> Linux Mint website---->choose the correct version--->download it directly or via torrent as an .iso image----> download IMGBURN from the net(free)--->a blankCD/DVD should be inserted in the DVD Drive---> select "burn file to disk",also "tick" VERIFY and wait till it's over----> Now you have the Live and/or installable DVD at hand--->install it in your laptop by booting from the DVD drive--->usually that option is by pressing the F2 key repeatedly until the "MENU" is displayed--->choose "BOOT",select OR highlight cd drive and with the CD/DVD in the drive--->REBOOT!! At what pace you learn totally depends on your "fire in the belly" determination! :study:

PS: as mentioned,no Windows! Then you'll have no cosy fall back option!

You can find out a lot just by lurking, searching, doing, and then asking very specific questions.
