I am busy trying to figure out my starting point in writing a programme, i was given a hint that i should use a selection statement, so i dont know how to go about that issue

I would uggest some bash tutorial if that's what you have in mind.
Google is always a good starting point.

Is it C, shell scripting, anything else? You really can't program anything if you don't even know what programming language you will be using. If you let us know what programming language you are supposed to be using then we can suggest you some tutorial(s) so you can get started.

It seems like you weren't paying so much attention in the classroom ;)
