New to Linux and trying to install on a memory stick
Hi guys,
I'm very new to Linux and am trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 onto a USB memory sick. I've followed the instructions on: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ubuntu-...-from-live-cd/ I've also created a boot CD (Machine will not boot from USB) using the instructions on: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-boo...or-ubuntu-810/ All seems to go well whilst going through the instructions, but when I boot it comes up with the following: [ 0.748459] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found [ 0.748572] EDD information not available. [ 0.748908] VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block(8,1) [ 0.749031] Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions: [ 0.749157] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1) I'm guessing that it's not finding the USB memory stick, any suggestions on what I've done wrong? I would try this on a machine which does boot from USB, but unfortunately I don't have one. Cheers, Jay |
Your right its not finding more specifically the root partition you have created on the USB Stick. Do you have a /etc/fstab lay from the live build? that will give you the correct options to supply the kernel at boot time, which bootloader is it using grub i would guess?
