new to linux
 
I recently switched from MS Win vista and so on..... Faedup by viruses and antiviruses and routine loss of data. I am new to the system and learning to install the programmes/applications to ubuntu. I will try to never switch back

If you know the name of a specific application, you can use Synaptic (System → Administration → Synaptic Package Manager).
The advantage to using these methods are that you will be automatically notified of updates.
You can select Third Party Applications from the Show list box in the Add/Remove... application to see available third party applications.
