NEW to linux!
 

hi im about to try on linux on my computer,im used to windows like most others. and now im advised to try on pclinux, so i wounder if that is a good start for me? or should i try some other? i heard that this one got the most of the programs you need like basic to start. but i dunno. happy for any respons and advice. tyty sica22

PCLOS is a good start indeed, it is easy to install, maintain and of course to use. If you try it and don't really like it, never mind, try another distro. It will take some time to find your favourite distribution.

well im not gone use linux for any elegal aktivety it can be uset for. basecly just for internett torrent and some gaming. so if there is somethis that makes that easy to do it's fine. and not somehing i need to scripte my self to make things work.

Gaming could be an issue due to the fact most popular games are geared towards the windows market. You could install an emulator like wine and try your luck with that. Not sure the success rate or how difficult is could be due to the fact im not a gamer and have never tested games with wine.

As for what distro, it all depends on how much you want to learn. Distro's like Unbuntu and from what i've read here, PCLinux, work straight out of the box, with a minimal learning curve on install. Distro's like Slackware require a working knowledge of your system pre and post install to ensure everything is running as it should be. Again, it depends what you want, I always go for the later option, I like to control my system, not the other way around.

I would use Ubuntu, if only because it has far more software packages available and because it is so much easier to find online tutorials. Plus: there are some places where you can get even more easy to install packages, such as

I would go with ubuntu as a general rule, just because it has been so kind to me in the learning of, but if you have any idea how powerful/not powerful the pc you're putting it on, that would make a big difference to which flavour I would recommend.

Well, nevertheless some members are recommending ubuntu, I recommend you to leave it until you have more GNU/Linux experience. Its because you will need to reinstall your ubuntu every half year. This is because they release a new version every half year, even if it is not ready for being released (not 100% stable). The other thing, is that they don't add new packages to repositories to older releases, only security patches. In a year your system will become very outdated this way.
Anyway: if you want to try it, just go ahead, nobody will force you anything.

when you are ready to start gaming, look up cedega. Just make sure your video card is up to snuff with linux drivers, and you should be in good shape

PClinux is a good choice. It will do most common tasks easily. Had all my needed drivers. I could play & record cds & dvds without a lot of problems, see & hear videos on youtube.
