New Suse 9.0 Install - What to do first?

Trying to get my grip on commands and syntax to get simple things done, but wanted advice on what things I should concentrate on, at least for now. I have been working on M$ stuff for about 14 years, but needed to take the plunge into the Linux world. There is alot to like about it, at least the distributions that I have tried. Suse 9.0 setup fine for me once I had the cd's, and being security-minded, I'd like to make sure my system is secure before I learn all the ins and outs, if that's even possible.

I want to have the latest kernel, but no idea how to compile/install etc.. I want to take a look at Gnome, and the other gazillion browsers, applications and products this distro has to offer, but it is somewhat overwhelming. I still don't have my printer installed lol. I am determined to be patient and read more and more, but I would like at least to focus on one thing at a time and try to get a handle on simple concepts. Yes, I am still fiddling with desktop wallpapers, icons, fonts etc... LOL

This is a great forum, and I know as more and more people head down the Linux highway, the learning curve is at the next bend.

If you want to become a powerful and feared unix wizard, bookmark this:

Yeah, I know it's a whole lot, but it's worth reading. If you really do devote yourself to reading it, you could be a wizard within a year or so. Also you can skip most of the first 3 chapters.
