New Pc Help
Hello every one.I just got done with building my first PC and I bought a LINUX starter kit today to use it as my operating system, it wont boot up? Do I still need WIDOWS to run LINUX? This is a fresh new pc- never had a system on it yet.I went to bios and had my DVD drive as to boot(because I got a DVD version of LINUX). But it still wont start, Is it me?

Why won't it start, what is happening? Is it giving you a system disk not found error, is it getting stuck in POST somewhere or is the linux installer starting but freezing?

It just gives me a black screen that says--
REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER DRIVE INSERT BOOT MEDIA IN SELECTED DEVICE PRESS ANY KEY Thanks for the fast response TWOSPEED |
You don't need Windows to run Linux. Is the DVD drive you're putting into the system bootable? What distribution is it? Have you tried some other bootable CD to make sure that booting from the DVD drive in general is working?

I googled your problem and found this. Check it out!
"Error: "Reboot and select proper boot device" "You have an external drive connected to your computer. When you start the computer and the external drive is switched on, an error message is displayed: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." The computer will attempt to boot (load an operating system) from any disk drive specified in the Bios, in the order these devices are listed in the Bios. This error occurs because a drive that does not have a bootable operating system (the external drive) has been placed before the hard drive in the search order. If the drive is not switched on, the computer does not see it and therefore does not try to boot from it. Solution Method 1 Ensure that the external drive is switched off whenever you start or restart the computer. Method 2 Change the order of the boot devices. * Enter Bios Setup (this is done by pressing a key as requested during start-up) * Select the Boot menu (or similar) * Select Boot Device Priority (or similar) * Change the device order so that the external drive is listed after the hard drive, or remove it from the list of bootable devices altogether. I went to BIOS and had the DVD be the first to boot I also resarted and held down the F8 key and set the DVD to boot------still the same.

Try my suggestion of finding another bootable disk (burn a copy of Knoppix if you can't find anything else) to make sure the drive is good.

One question I have--seeing this as a new computer I was not able to load the drivers for the DVD drive, no operating system. CAN THIS BE A PROBLEM?

Wow, a lot of info up there...
My quick guess is the obvious: How did you obtain your DVD? Did you burn it yourself? If so, how? Where did you get the image, and is it an ISO file (does it end with .iso)? If it is, you wil need to burn it as an image to the disc, not as a file to the disc. Cool |
I bought this today from BORDERS book store for $ 42.00.It is a SAMS LINUX STARTER KIT.

In that case, it's probably a setting in your BIOS that is giving you the headache. Make sure that the drive you are placing the DVD in is indeed a DVD drive, and that this is the drive that is setup for booting.
In the rare instance that the disc is bad, you could always try the above twice mentioned option of trying *any* other bootable media to rule out that possibility. Cool |
Yep, I just pulled the drive out and it is a DVD drive--what did I miss in the BIOS?

The only boot disc I have is a WINDOWS 98 BOOT DISC I put it in and it started so I stopped. guess the dvd drive works.Any help here on the BIOS, I'm a newbee and not that computer cool on stuff--but i'm not stupid .
