Question New Mandrake install problems

I finally got enough courage to install 9.2 Mandrake discovery.I have a dell 8100,windows me.I went to the bios and set it to boot from the cdrom,I could not find the pnp os setting which it says to set to no but I went on with the install anyway.Everything was going ok till I got about 20 or so config errors but I selected go ahead anyway.I set the bios back to 1st boot hard drive.I get the os selection screen then login screen but when i type my name in then startx I get an error.I set it up during install to have no password.Im very new, thanks for any help!Hopefully I will be logging in next time with Konqueror!

So you get an error. What does the error say?

At the black login screen it says
mandrake linux release 9.2(fivestar)for i586
kernel 2.4.22 -10mdk on an i686?tty1
local host login:_
I type in my user name and enter. It tells me when I last logged in then it asks for my password which I never set up so I try my user name and it says login incorrect or command not found. How do I get off this screen?

Urm - I think we are still missing some info here. If it tells you the time of your last login, and if it is trying to execute commands, then you must have logged in! Are you sure you are not being prompted to _set_ a password?

Try typing 'whoami' to see what that says. Did you set a root password? Try logging in as root. Are you sure the installation completed fully?

Also the startx command may not be in your path by default, so you may have to 'locate startx'. It's probably lurking in /usr/X11R6/bin or somewhere. However, if Mandrake couldn't get X configured on the first go you are in for a bumpy ride doing it manually. Maybe try the 'VESA' driver, or try booting a Knoppix CD and see if that can generate a working config. You'll need to look for an XFree howto, and do some head-scratching.

Keep at it!

I did whoami and root and it still wants a password.I did not set a root password.maybe the fact that it says localhost login is the problem?Im not sure if the installation fully completed.I can get onto windows me part of the partition. Can I try a reinstall if is partitioned with this possibly faulty linux install?

Sorry, I'm honestly stumped then. Try a reinstall/rescue from CD, or fork out for a boxed Linux and some official support - MandrakeSoft sure as hell need the cash! :-)
