New laptop - nightmare with Linpus Linux 2.6.32 :(

Just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5745G, straight away I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.10, I stuck in the cd and rebooted the new laptop that currently only seemed to have Linpus Linux, I then got masses of error messages saying something such as cannot run var/ etc etc and then

:cannot touch 'var/lock/subsys/local': input/output error

and then...

EXT2-fs error (device sda1) : ext2_lookup: deleted inode referenced (lots of numbers here)

It does this for many, many lines then sites there for ages doing nothing and wont allow me to type any commands ( I dont know any command really apart from 'reboot') and then finally after 5 mins or so shows the command prompt [root@localhost /]# but I cant do anything from here.

I've done some searches and found this thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...o-open-759461/

but startx and system-cofig-display dont work and just says bad commands.

Ive also tried changing the settings so it always reboots from dvd, same problem, made a USB ubuntu start up, forced booting from usb, same again.

Brand new laptop and cant do anything and lots of work to do

Any help would be appreciated...

Well, from the errors you posted, it sounds like it's having difficulty reading your hard-drive...

Which LiveCD image did you use? I assume you've got the normal one... Because the "alternative" CD image doesn't boot (and probably doesn't come with) an X server (essentially the graphics thingy) - if you want to have graphics then you'll need to get the normal LiveCD.

Can you boot to the already-installed OS? Do you have any problems reading/writing to sda1 using that? Have you tried other LiveCDs? If necessary, you should be able to install it from the root shell, but it would be best to work out why stuff isn't working and fix the actual problem if possible, rather than rushing into doing something which might mess things up...

Sorry but I dont know how to start up the OS from command prompt, I have never used Linux before only Ubuntu, I dont have any LiveCD just an ubuntu one that I downloaded from here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

I tried running this from a usb too which didnt work either. The file is 'ubuntu 10-10 desktop-i386.iso'

I dont know what sda1 is but ive seen it mentioned in some error messages, however some are very fast so i cant read them. This is a brand spanking new laptop so I dont understand why it would have problesm reading the HD, is there a way I can format the whole thing and start again?

Hello together,

when having a commandprompt, please execute the following four commands
Code:
fdisk -l
Code:
cat /etc/fstab
Code:
df -h
Code:
lspci
and post the entire output here

Markus
