New Kubuntu 7.10 Not Booting and Windows Partition Won't Boot
 

To begin with, here are the particulars of my system:

Intel Pentium 4 1.5ghz Processor
2GB RAM
40GB Hard Disk (Primary)
100GB Hard Disk (Secondary)
100GB Hard Disk (External)
Installed OS: Windows XP Professional

I downloaded Partition Magic 8.0 and created a 3GB partition on my primary hard drive and a 2gb partition for my swap space on the secondary drive. I then rebooted the system with a DVD of Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and used the text install to install the Linux version. I chose to install GRUB so that I could dual boot into the new Linux installation and Windows XP.

After the installation I tried to boot into my new Linux installation, and I get to the screen with the Kubuntu logo, but the progress bar goes only about 20% and then just hangs. I rebooted several times with the same result. I booted into the recovery mode and the same thing happens there.

Worse, when I tried to boot into my Windows XP partition it would not boot saying that two files: autochkdsk and xmnt2002 were not present (please forgive me, I don't know if I spelled the file names correctly).

Has anyone run into this problem before and can you help me?

have you tried doing an F8 when booting windows, if not then get an original win disc and do a repair...
that should get win going...

as for linux, ubuntu may not be suitable for your chip set, have you tried any other distro, and have you done a verbose boot, so you can see whats failing...
It may need to fschk your hard drives and as such can take a while when booting...
I have noticed over the years that sometimes the drive registers a date error when installing and considers itself to not have been checked for some time...this can take upto 20 miniutes on largedrives...

2gb ram is enough to have no swap but ppl say dont run without swap, well i dont use swap on any of my machines now and they have 1 gb on one and 1.5 on the laptop...both run sweet, but then if i used apps that required more ram i would deffinitely add it....

Did you specify the root linux driver as the primary partition? Once accidentally I forgot to make in on primary partition and got the same error as you got.

To see what error you receive press F1 or F2 when booting.
