New kernel made files disappear

I compiled a new kernel for my Ubuntu 9.04 computer. I had a lot of files on my desktop including the source for the kernel. When I installed and booted into the new kernel all the files are gone. When I look at the space available on my hard drive it looks as if the files are still taking up space. The files are not hidden, atleast not on the Desktop.

I thought that when you change the kernel it leaves all your files intact, so what happened to my files?

Well, I don't know how you can lose files by just upgrading kernel. If you had lost an entire partition, that could have been explained as a possible result of missing file system driver. Anyway, take a shell and try the following commands and see if you find the missing files

ls -laR ~/Desktop

Now check lost+found and see if any files are present there
sudo su -
ls -laR /lost+found/
