New Install problem with keyboard and starting the GUI in Debian

Hi There I am rather new to Linux and have a problem I have installed a installed a VM ware application called ISPCONFIG which is running debian. When I installed it I noticed two problems
1. the keyboard is not correct it is displaying odd characters with some keys, I suspect that it is set to the wrong language but do not know how to change this from the console
2. which brings me to the next problem I do noy know how to start the GUI, tried startx and startkde but had no joy
I am new to this wonderful new world of Linux so would love some help many thanks David

2. You need to configure X first. "man xorg.conf" and do some other research. This is one of the hardest parts of using Linux because video is so hard to support due to all the hardware around and the proprietary nature of it (and the drivers).

1. What kind of keyboard and is it new or old and crusty?

Mike
