rute is an excellent online tutorial which is easy to read and easy to understand. as for distros...try a few different ones. i went through 3 or 4 before finally settling on slackware.
also, there are live cd's available such as knoppix and slax which are easy to use and don't require you to install anything...a nice way to get the taste of linux without really doing any work :)

Hi and welcome to LQ. The Linux Cookbook is another good book that will help you get to grips with Linux.

OK, where do you want to start?

Have you got a Linux distro installed?

The two threads have been merged.
