New computer, new problems
I built one of those Shuttle SS51g mini-computers and installed Mandrake 8.2. After the install, I discovered that Mandrake was using Xfree86 version 3.3.6 instead of 4.2 like it did on my other computer.
When I went into the Control Center to configure the display, I found the Sis SG86C201 chip listed, but when I selected and applied it, I got an error message. Something about 16 ppd(?) not supported by this chip. Has Mandrake selected 3.3.6 because it knows the IGP won't work with 4.2? Or am I getting the error message because I'm not using 4.2? How can I switch to 4.2 to try that? How do I determine which XF86Config file is in use? There's about four of them listed under /etc/X11/XF86Config. |
At the end of install, you had the option to choose X 4.2. There's a button that lets you choose 3.3.6. Maybe called Advanced/Manual.
To switch to 4.2, the eaiest way is to reinstall. Just by the modified date, the latest is the one you're using. |
Thanks for your response.

ls /etc/X11 -tcr -l
If errors, do locate XF86Config* If errors, do su updatedb Yeah, that's what I was talking about. |
I used the ls /etc/X11 -tcr -l command and it listed just about every XF86Config file there is. Here's what it listed for today's date:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5771 Oct 6 2002 XF86Config-4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 5389 Oct 6 2002 XF86Config.test-4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 15602 Oct 6 2002 XF86Config.test I used the locate command and got: command not found |
I figured it out. The IGP in this computer will not work with Xfree86 version 4.2 only 3.3.6.
Oh well, I was going to buy a GF4 card anyway so I can use my DVI connection on my new monitor. |
