system --> preferences --> main menu --> applications --> internet --> so, look for thunderbird, if you dont got it, pick up a *new item.
If you did, add that launch to panel (or desktop) by choice!

I have "Menus an toolbars preferences" but I don't see any *new item option!

try this out:

click on the panel (mouse - right side) then... "Add to panel" --> "Custom application launcher" then browse your system.
tip:
user $ whereis thunderbird
/usr/bin/thunderbird

then fill the form, icon, name so on.

same to the desktop!

When I right-click on the panel, I get the window "Edit Menus". But there is no was to add anything. It's only possible to uncheck items (that are already in the menu) to make them unvisible, but no add-possibility.
