New ADSL - Firewall Security Help
I have my slackware 9.1 up and running perfectly - well, I thought it was perfect until last night using mlnet / mldonkey.
After downloading a few tunes, all mlnet downloas were complete and I killed mlnet and also my web browser and mail etc - all network apps. However, my network activity window manager dockapp indicated that there was still being data being transmitted - presumably being sent and not received. I restarted and still data was going somewhere. Yiikes!! Do I need a firewall, or is there one already in Slack 9.1? Is there another KDE or window manager app (preferably not Gnome as I do not think I have gnome installed). I tried installing GuardDog - not sure if i configured it correctly. Data was still moving. |
What is your network monitor dockapp, what
does it measure (which interfaces is it watching)? Cheers, Tink |
Err good question. I assume just the ethernet card ie the ADSL ethernet modem. That is my only network connection.

Chances are there's a lo interface that X e.g.
might be using ... how about a watch -d -n 5 ifconfig eth0 Or use netstat to see what's going on man netstat for details ... :) Cheers, Tink |
Thanks. I'll check those comands out tonight.
