NetZero or other ISP?
 

Hi all, first post here!

This weekend I reconfigured (formatted HDs) my computer as dual boot WIN98 (fresh install) and Fedora7 from the LINUX for Dummies DVD. The WIN install was a PITA (as usual) but the LINUX went very smoothly and works fine (yay!).

I read the wiki, and it seems like internet connection should be easy enough under LINUX, but I'm planning to change ISPs because of issues with WalMart Connect/ Netscape Connect (the ONLY dialup number still provided for the Roanoke area is slooooow, there used to be another that still works but isn't given out anymore). I was thinking of going to NetZero, but the wiki states that additional software is needed and I don't see where to find it. I searched this forum but most of the results were several years old and didn't pertain to additional software.

So, where can I find the software?
And is there a better (cheap) ISP?

it is easier to install java jre before switching over to netzero, while you still have an internet connection using your package manager.

Well, I decided to go with RevNet, a basic ISP - a couple bucks more but they're local so I can easily talk to them if I need to, and the money goes into the local economy.

Both the modems I have seem to be WIN modems. After installing the US Robotics it says in the WIN98 device manager that it's a "V.92 FAX WIN INT". I'm not sure about the Diamond, the dev man says "Supramax 56i Voice PCI" but it also has a "Moden Enumerator". On the card it says "PCA XP56i PCI HCF Voice" (P/N 23540020-002). Diamond isn't even listed in the LQ "Supported Hardware" modem section. Looks like I'm off to buy a real modem. I'm using WIN98 at the moment, but I had to download another browser, IE5 crashed whenever I accessed this page. OffByOne Browser displays strangely, I had tried Avant Browser and Slim Browser but they had crashes at other sites. I can't seem to get the old Mozilla browser that I used for years, and I'm starting to regret this whole ordeal.

(edit) I see a couple Diamond modems listed under "other" but not mine specifically. It acts the same as the USR in Linux networking, so I suspect it's a winmodem.

I also tried to install Linux on my newer computer. Putting the DVD in the drive, it boots into the install program but it can't find the stuff to install in the CD drive. I tried installing all the drivers available in the program, but no luck. It can't seem to find the WIN98 disc when I try to install it either. It's a MSI P35 NEO motherboard with Core 2 Duo processor, SATA hard drive, and EIDE DVD (LG brand). How can it boot from the CD/DVD and then not find the drive?
