Networking SuSE to Windows 98

Well i recently installed SuSE onto my computer. It went Perfectly, except for one thing. My mother who is using a bridge to my DSL modem to share the internet with me cannot use the internet when i am in SuSE. She uses Win 98. I am not very good at networking, i am a geek but more with graphics than anything else.

so lol thanks

Hi, and welcome to LQ.

Can you enlighten us with what the wiring is
like?

Is the modem attached to the SuSE box? And
mom's machine is attached to it via switch/hub?
Using dhcp or static addresses? :)

Cheers,
Tink

Moms box(win98) is connected using a crossover cable to my box (SuSE)
my box is connected to the DSL modem VIA RJ-45 ethernet.

I have 2 lan ports on my motherbord. She uses a lan card with 1 port.

And network addresses are ... static or dhcp? :)

Cheers,
Tink

i think i set it so that it will be dhcp, i think. the Dynamic one. whatever was default for SuSE

How did the bridging (which most likely is
actually routing) work with the Windows on
your machine ... is mom's machine dhcp, too,
and what used to be on the interface that
mom's machine talks to?

In my XP network connections it says there is a bridge between both ports. To share the internet i just put the XP cd into my mothers drive and ran the network wiz on both computers.

I cannot tell if it is dhcp on my mothers. I know there is the network connection properties, and the network neighborehood. I know how to start a new workgroup, a bit.
when i enter IPconfig into the command propmpt i get

ip address :192.168.0.4
subnetmask:255.255.255.0
default gateway:192.168.0.1

It is the same after rebooting and changeing user logins.

On XP right now.
My IPconfig is

Connection specfic dns suffix: domain.actdsltmp
IPaddress: 192.168.0.3
subnetmask:255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.0.1 (same as mothers gateway)

Well then :)

I don't know whether YaST2 will offer support for
this undertaking ... if it doesn't, there's always the
manual way.

You can have a look at this:
http://easyfwgen.morizot.net/gen/

It will generate a script from your input that will allow
your machine to act as a router for mom, just as XP
did before. If your internet connection is sweet already
just check that the second adapter is configured as
192.168.0.1 in SuSE, too, and then create the NAT
script from the web-site. If that works when run manually
as root, you can add it to your rc.local.

Tink

ok thanks! your awsome support, and thanks for sticking up with me. :D

Pleasure mate, keep us posted about the outcome! :)

OOh i just entered my IP (i found off some website) and my modem or something has a website that i accessed and it has an active user list. MAC address. DCHP is on for my linux. In the routing table it says 192.168.0.0 is valid. same with 3 other addresses.
But the user list does not list my mothers computer

Nohbudy 08-29-2004 05:58 AM

I just found out it is not rc.local. But instead it is now called /ect/rc.d/boot.local
