Networking /ICS Problem
 

Hi all,
1st of all, eth0 not starting at bootup.
i have to go into start/settings/network settings when the window opens eth0 is innactive for a couple of seconds, then goes active.
Then i can connect with my winXP comp. i.e. ftp, samba, http etc...
If i don't open the gui network settings window and wait for it to go "active" i cant connect at all. The checkbox for "start at bootup" is checked. The network card is recognised by RH9.
How can i get it to start at bootup??

2nd prob....
Wen i do connect to my winXP machine, i can't get the RH9 comp access to the net.
As i said, i can ftp etc... i can ping the ip addy of the 2nd network card in my xp comp. My XP network card (the net access one) is set to "share net connections" all firewalls turned off. I tried both gateway address's in my RH comp. But to no avail. even tried the ip for my cable modem. i can even link RH9 to my xbox, but not the net.
I got my comps set up like this....

RH9 ip 192.168.0.100, subnet 255.255.255.0 gatway 192.168.0.2

XP ip1 (net) 192.168.0.1, ip2 (lan) 192.168.0.2, subnet 255.255.255.0

cable modem ip 192.168.100.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
I can only ping the 2nd ip address in my xp machine. Which is right, i think, cus thats the nic its connected to.

3rd prob, not a network prob.
My RH9 runs on Dual PentiumIII Xeon 1mhz.
I got a feeling it's only seeing 1 processor. How can i check?? If only running on 1, how can i get it to see the 2nd??

i think i might have sorted the problem with the processor.
Re compile the kernal.... eek!!

For your 2nd problem, it might be that the DNS server on the RH9 machine is incorrect. I am remotely accessing a RH9 computer here using vnc and I have changed ISPs a couple times and I have had to change the DNS manually each time. I think it's located in /etc/resolv.conf. When you don't have the correct DNS it will not be able to resolve a website into an ip address. So if you go to www.google.com, it should resolve it into 64.233.167.147 (or at least my location does). If you can ping 64.233.167.147 but not www.google.com then it's probably your dns. To find the ip address for your dns, do the ipconfig /all on your winxp computer and copy that into the /etc/resolv.conf file for your DNS. Good luck.
