network settings inaccesible

When I access 'Network Settings' it opens up 'grayed out.' And if I try and click on 'click to make changes' "Authentication note pops up requesting Authentication required." Why is Network Settings grayed out, and how do I fulfill the note to Authenticate? Thanks.
I'm running linux mint 16 petra

What OS?
What DE?
Do you have a wireless icon on screen?
If so did you click on it?
Have you checked to see if user is part of netdev in /etc/group?

cat /etc/group

What OS? My original post state: "I'm running linux mint 16 petra"
What DE? I'm not familiar with this term, please explain.
Do you have a wireless icon on screen? What screen? I accessed Network Settings via Menu/Administration/Network and the box opens up but grayed out. I tried to attach picture of this screen but it was rejected, apparently it exceeded allowable posted size?

You should be part of this group to access network (have permission). Your username should be next to netdev.
To view group open terminal & enter command
Quote:
cat /etc/group
If your username isn't there open the file & edit with
Quote:
nano /etc/group
