You will need to find out what your network hardware is. Open a terminal and type 'lspci' and ENTER. Post the information you see on network chips so we know what you have. Then we can see if ubuntu has the driver for it.

....actually this problem came when i installed ubuntu 10.10.immediately installing vista home basic..i thought this problem may be by wrong installation of operating system..i changed it to 10.04..but problem persisted..while at start up "serial number is missing" comes at splash screen of hp invent(place where "press esc for startup menu" comes)..i don't know whether these problems are connected with each other..but my lan net is working in vista..

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I finally got a chance to check my system out on wired connection. I wanted to do that, because I have the same ethernet as you do. The wired worked for me; so I'm thinking you have the wrong driver. I've never used my wired and didn't have to do anything special to get it going. It could be that I have some package installed that you do not, but I don't know what it would be. I see that you were trying some wrong drivers. Mine shows it using r8169 My kernel is 2.6.32-29-generic and I've got Ubuntu lucid which is 10.04

From lspci -vv:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)
