Network Monitor

I've just installed Mandrake 8.1 and I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. The network monitor does not seem to be working. When I open it up I get a blank box. Can anyone help out there? Thanks. By the way I have tried re-installing the network and internet packages from the cd rom on a install repair, but that did not fix the problem.

need more info

When something doesn't work like this it's usually best to forget the graphical stuff for a moment; it is usually easier to do it by hand.

- how are you connecting?
|- internal 56k modem
(is it WinModem or a "Real modem")

(- a modem is supposed to convert analogue <---> digital for a phoneline but a winmodem doesn't do this, it just provides somewhere to plug a phoneline into and tells the operating system to do the work.)

|- External 56k Modem
|- You've got a broadband setup of some sort

For getting help: always give much more info in the future. We don't even know if you have plugged your computer into a phone line at the moment :) For all we know you might be at work using Mandrake.

Good luck with good question asking :)

You have /var/log/messages watch for latest lines in that file.

You can type tail -f /var/log/messages to see what is last.

Oh, I forgot to say that in that file you can see if there are some error messages, etc...

Thanks for responding!

In the last few days I installed Mandrake 8.2 because I figured it would be more stable. The internet connection works ok. I'm using an lan card with an adsl connection. Still sometimes it has trouble connecting the first time. Usuallly I have to logout and log, or reboot to get it working. Right now that's better than nothing. Thanks again! again
