Network connection & sound card

I was shown Ubuntu the other week by a friend encouraging me to make the 'switch'. I really would like to but am having multiple problems. I'm totally new to Linux. I Dual loaded Ubutuntu Jaunty with my current XP. Problem 1. Can't get connected to internet.I have a Belkin Wireless G+ usb adapter (F5D7051)and read that wicd is best. So removed Network manager completley and installed wicd (I think!) but wicd won't launch! Read a number of things but I just got totally lost, way over my head. Latest read out =

I have tried to install a number of things but just found out they need to go in specific files when I thought it would work automatically! So I fear I may have 'stuff' all over the place & thus not working! How do I actually install from usb stick(I have to use laptop & usb stick for internet)?

Problem 2. After dual boot my sound has gone!
Problem 3. I can't get back to XP - 'hall.dll file missing'

I fear I may still not be ready for Linux but if anyone can help me I would be persuaded I am sure!

Thanks in advance.

Problem 2 and 3 aren't caused by Ubuntu, but they do seem to be a bit of a ball ache.

Can you do use the output of:

Code:

iwconfig
lspci|grep Net
lsmod

Then hit the wireless kill switch and type in
Code:

dmesg|tail

When you said 'kill the wireless' did you mean just pull out the usb adaptor?

I also have the additional problem now that open office won't open properly saying there is no space in 'back-up'. I have to use open off. to copy & paste the above info. So how do I clear out the back up files to allow more space?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone any suggestions???

Thanks.

jamescondron 06-14-2009 06:15 PM

Sorry, must have skipped over the USb part, hadn't realised you were using it. USB is slightly different. Can I have the ouput of

Code:

lsusb
please.

What is the exact error message for openoffice?

Skywalker111 06-15-2009 06:24 AM

luke@luke-desktop:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0b27:0601 Ritek Corp.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 4317:0711
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
luke@luke-desktop:~$

Devices 003 & 002 go when the usb adaptor is unplugged.

The open office error message is :-
"Open Office.org could not save important internal information due to insufficient free disc space a the following location:
/home/luke/.openoffice.org/3/user/backup

Please free up some space then press the retry button to try saving the date again."

I'm actually thinking of resarting again with the live cd as I can't get into Windows anymore because of missing hal.dll file and even the rescue disk doesn't work. So I imagaine if I did do this (after saving essential docs) then this would solve the problem???????

Thanks.

I re-installed Ubuntu completely forgetting dual boot plugged in my modem direct. I got sound and internet straight away (yes free of Microsoft at last!!!!).

However I still cannot get the wireless working. Do I need to install any of the updates which came into synaptic manager (the security ones updates automatically)? Any further suggestions for the wireless?

Thanks in advance
