Netscape 6.2

I downloaded netscape 6.2 yesterday (in Windows 98 and Linux Mandrake 8.0...insane,,yes)... Here's my problem... Net 6.2 is really very good in Windows 98 but.. I can't install it on mandrakes os... I did the tar,gz xzvf-installer-netscape etcetera bit but after downloading 27 megabytes (that's 3 hours +) I can't install it? Please dear Linux Gods help me....
Why is Linux so tricky and why is there so little support...
Thankx

well what's gone wrong? please give some more information if you want some useful help.

when you decompress the file you should end up with a netscape-installer program in the tar directory... running it is meant to install it.

Well, I went to the netscape site, choose (Unix) linux 2.2 and downloaded i386 tar.gz file. I openend the file which now seems to be an "xpi" file(not sure what that is but have a feeling this is the problem). I then went to cnet's site and tried again bur still the same result.
I'm sure it's probably simple enough, like mandrake doesen't support the new netscape?
Thank you.

have you tried the ./configure,make, make install routine?

lordevereste 11-02-2001 03:17 PM

That's a new one...hmmn... Where can I find out how to do that?
Thank you.-)

When you decompress the file you should have this:
directory called - xpi
and these files:
config
installer
license
netscape-installer
netscape-installer.bin
readme

then all you do is go to a shell, change to the directory you
decompressed netscape to and then type:

./netscape-install

that should start the program for you. it has worked for me.

sorry, that should have been:

./netscape-installer

How do I change the directory?
Sorry, not very god at ths tho' I found the files...
Thanks

acid_kewpie 11-02-2001 04:38 PM

cd thedirectorythatnetscape-installerisin

you know you should have netscape on your distro cd's...? you just want v6? i presume...

lordevereste 11-02-2001 04:48 PM

Yes... 6.2 is very good in windows ans has a far superior mail program to 4.77 and kde (or evolution which is nice but bug ridden)and I also want to learn how open downloaded programs...

lordevereste 11-02-2001 05:00 PM

I'm trying here... I type 'dir' in a terminal and I'm shown the ;netscape installer' I downloaded

what should I type to get into the 'netscape' folder' directory.. or the XPi folder...
I know I must appear really dumb but, I can't figure this out.
The decompressed tar.gz files are now in

"file:/home/michael/netscape-installer" and with this there is an XPI folder of the netscape decompressed files...
How do I do this... Please step by step
Thank you and sorry for being such a poor student

lordevereste 11-02-2001 05:28 PM

OK I got into the dir xpi but terminal tells me 'no such file' when I type./netscape-installer...
(I notice the XPi file does not contain the netscape-installer which is in the netscape folder)
in the xpi folder there a packages named AIM.xpi BROWSER.xpi and I guess all the decompressed files... This is really tough
When I click on the these I'm tod.."sorry the utoility zip is not in your path" am I missing something?
Have a feeling I'm not going to get any more help lol
Best

rshaw 11-02-2001 06:36 PM

you don't need to go into the .xpi folders. do a :
cd /home/michael/netscape-installer
once there do ./netscape-installer

lordevereste 11-02-2001 07:05 PM

I did the above and after ./netscape-installer was informed bash: ./netscape-installer: is a directory...
What now?

rshaw 11-02-2001 08:57 PM

sounds like you need to move one more directory down. when in /home/michael/netscape-installer do an ls -l to find the name of the next directory. it's probably netscape-installer again or something similar. then cd /home/michael/netscape-installer/<next directory>
then do: ./netscape-installer (or ./whatever they named it)

an easier way to find the right place is to browse your home directory with kde or gnome until you find
the netscape-installer-bin then type that path in the console
