NETGEAR Atheros AR9170 chipset installation help

Hello, I am new to linux and have been trying to get my device to work but have come upon several road blocks. I have been researching that the USB adapter that I have (Netgear WNDA3100) is fairly new in implementation but currently has supporting drivers for it. So I've downloaded otus, which I figure is the package for installation, and the supplicant for it but have no clue as to how I am supposed to install or integrate them onto backtrack4. I am currently running vmware player to run backtrack4. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What distro of linux are you running?
Also was type of file did you download e.g tar, rpm?

at the moment I am just running backtrack4 on vmware player but I do have ubuntu 9.04 for desktop. should I not use bt4 + vmplayer as my main OS? like I said, I am really new to this and trying different ones out but would love to gain some advise on which ones I should focus on. btw, the file I downloaded is under an extension file of .tar.bz2, not sure if that helps but thanks for the reply.

Did you install this distro under Vmware or is it running off a live cd as if its off a live cd instruction below wont be of much use

if not to unzip the file do the following

Quote:

tar -jxvf filename.tar.bz2
cd file_folder_name
./configure
make
make install
not used that distro before but you want to issue commands like those to get started with installing the file

okay sorry to make this so complicated. so i was running it off an unzipped file i had on my xp OS desktop and using vmware player to run it, but ive now just installed the ubuntu onto my desktop to make things easier to extract, etc. however, now i have the problem of making my usb adapter work and get online. i would hate to think that id have to switch between operating systems just to log on and come back for help everytime. thanks again
