Need to uninstall Mint 9 from dual boot machine

Recently, my Mint update informed me it had an upgraded kernel version of Mint 9 and asked did I want to upgrade. Me, not being an old hand at things Linux, upgraded. Instead of overwriting the older version, it put the upgraded version of Mint 9 BESIDE the older one. So now I have, actually, 4 versions of Mint 9 on my PC,(generic plus recovery mode for each) which is dual booted with Vista Home Premium.

I don't want this. I have had weird problems and hiccups since I upgraded. I want to get rid of the newer kernel version and use only the older one.

How do I uninstall the upgraded version of Mint 9? I have tried to boot into the older version, but there is no desktop and I have to type on the boot screen and in the terminal. It wants commands I don't know how to give. How do I restore my older version of Mint 9?

I just want one version on my PC in the dual boot with Windows Vista.

Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? If you give me terminal commands, please make sure they are copy and paste ready. lol.

If uninstalling involves deleting partitions and doing a manual partitioning and formatting, I'll need easy instructions for that also.
Thanks.

I would suggest posting up your current system config in regards to partitions and such, you will likely need to remove some of them at a minimum.

Have you considered vmware player and running your linux in a vm in unity mode (or your vista in a vm with unity mode)?

?
if you are talking about during boot there is listed 4 versions , then that is a safety feature
just boot from the last kernel .

rweaver. I know nothing about vmware. Is that a virtual hard drive?

I will try to get my partition specs, but I can tell you that I initially shrunk Vista and installed Mint 8 in the unallocated space. Vista is on, in Linux lingo, sda 1, while Mint 9 is installed on, I think, sda 6 and has a 4gig swap partition. I'll have to check. Remember I'm fairly new to Linux. What I'm not very familiar with on the partition thing is the drive naming protocol.

John, that's what I want to get rid of. I don't want the upgraded kernel. My Mint 9 has been rather unstable since I upgraded and I want to get rid of it.

When I try to boot into the older kernel, I have to type in the black screen, and then it brings up the terminal within the black screen, and I have no idea what it wants of me. I don't know what commands to give it. And I don't know how to exit from the black screen----I had to do a hard shut down last time I tried to boot into the older Mint 9 kernel.

I have two Mint 9s, the newer unstable, and taking up unnecessary space on my hard drive. Had I known beforehand the instability of the newer kernel version, I wouldn't have upgraded at all.

boot into the last good kernel .use the down arrow to select it then < enter>

downgrading a os is not always easy

to edit the boot menu
mint uses grub ? i think ??? edit the menu.lis or grub.conf in /boot/grub
if lilo ??
