Need to record and playback keyboard macros in Openbox

I want to assign 8 keys to be able to record and playback 4 different keyboard macro files. Mousing is not needed, just keystrokes would be fine.

I'm looking to be able to use this whether in a terminal session or mc or hopefully any program that doesn't have those 8 keys assigned to anything already.

I would like to run them from keybindings in openbox's rc.xml file that would then run a command to start recording, and another keystroke would tell it to stop recording and close the file. Hopefully it would be a readable file that I could save or edit if I wanted to, and playback when I wanted to. Perhaps I would only need one key to record and one more to playback if it would popup a save as box and an open box?

Anyone know a way I can to this?

Thanks

PS: A pause and resume function on record and maybe playback would be awesome, too

Perhaps 'script' will do what you want.
(man script)
