@schneidz: Is /proc/cpuinfo is unique for all operating systems? also is shell commands unique for all the systems?
If both are possible only I can automatically get the information without asking the user of my code. Else user have to specify.

they maybe (probably ?) different for different types of *nixes (you will have to experiment).

i know i have frustrations using grep on aix because it doesnt accept gnu parameters.
