Well, it looks like you're using Ubuntu. There's a lot of good information at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Natty. There is a section on installing programs there as well.

Unlike Windows, you don't visit the software's web page and download it manually. Quote:
Second, why would anyone use email when the question is already on a forum? On a forum, anyone can help and then people that have the same problem can find the thread and learn from it. |
I also would recommend to read the two links for newbies in my signature, that may help your understanding and may also help in getting the best help we can offer.

Yours just says "linux" if you hover over the little Tux head, so I have no idea what you're using other than some linux distro. |

A simple idea would be to do the following :-
1. Google for a software type - say network scanners. Choose an appropriate software after checking it out in detail and confirming if the software is available for linux OS. 2. Next search for the binary for the package - nmap****.deb file for Debian / Ubuntu users or nmap***.rpm file for Fedora users. The asterisks in the name are for some numbers which indicate the version etc. 3. Once you have the name and version of the software, just do following sudo apt-get install nmap*** or yum install nmap*** (Note :- no need to use the extension .deb or .rpm) This simple procedure could go a long way in solving lot of problems for the noobs ! regards nishith |
