I'm new to operating system installation so I need a step-by-step guide to install Linux (SuSe 7.1) on my system already running Windows98, with the hope of further installing NT or Win2k.
The system spec is:

PII 333
160MB RAM, 20GB HDD, 1.4MB FDD, VGA, 56k Voice/data/fax motorola modem.

I've installed the Win 98 succesfully and got stuck trying to install linux. Booting with the 1st and 2nd disks just seems to go off after signifying to be loading linux.

Please Help...or ie there something I'm doing wrong?

all the windows thingies need to be installed first before linux.

what video card do you have and do you get any messages or does it just sit there not doing anything?

are you using install floppy disks or cdrom disks?

You could install Linux or Windows 98 in any order, but if you are going to install W2K, you need to install W2k first (yuck). For better results boot from CD # 2. With the text mode to be in control of the situation. But you said that linux go off after loading linux. Well if you boot from the Disk # 1. Do you see the Graphic interface? if you cannot see it, it could be your video card, that is too new, for the Xfree 86. But if you boot with the CD # 2. You should have any problem. Please try to tell me exactly where the Linux get stuck. So we could help you out.

When you install SeSE with windows You have to do a custom LILO installation, Because with windows installed the defalt for the liol is to write it to a floppy.

You could configure it with yast and install yast to the master boor record, you dont have to customize the lilo. Only if you want windows to boot in the first place.

I just went thru what you are going thru. Heres the deal, you have nothing invested in this computer, but if you do save it to a disk somewhere. install win98se with just a normal installation. Then go to a dos terminal and do a chkdisk and defrag the hard drive. this will ensure that the disk is ok and that the data is all at the beginning of the disk. now create a boot disk and copy these three files from /dosutils/fips20 Restorbb.exe Fips.exe and Errors.txt to the disk. go into start=> control panel=> system=> performance and disable the virtual memory. It will scare you with a warning but go ahead anyway. Now reboot with that disk and run fips. this is where you start resizing the windows parition. it will come with three columns "old partion" "cylinder" and "new parition". using the arrow keys will change the sizes of this parition.

your /boot parition must be located within the first 1024 cylinders if your hard drive is larger than a certain size, which I believe yours is, so make sure that that happens.

now install as normal. It will detect the extra parition or at least red hat did and parition manually with disk druid or whatever the SuSe equivalent is. You may have to delete the second parition, the one you wish to install in, mine was set up as a fat32 and not a native linux. I just deleted it and added a native linux parition. The remainder of the setup should go ok.
