need help with samba

hello,

i'm a total newb i've read every help file i could and have been reading through the forums but i still can't get samba to work properly and it's been 3 weeks now so i gotta ask for help!!

i installed samba, edited the smb.conf file, created a tmp folder in my home directory, then started smb in the services but keep getting "network path not found" when trying to access it from windows. i can ping the linux box, but nbtstat gives me nothing.

i'm running redhat 9. what information do i need to give you to help me?

thanks so much for reading this!

hi loungelizard -

my current conf file reads as:

[global]
workgroup = MYGROUP
[test]
comment = Work damnit
path = /home/mrx/tmp
read only = no
guest ok = yes

i also have the example smb.conf file backed up if i need it.
do i have to create a new user with smbpasswd to access the linux box or something?

thanks for taking the time to post,

Look at my smb.conf. This is exaple is working

Code:
[global]
        hide unreadable = Yes
        socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192
        guest ok = Yes
        null passwords = yes
        domain master = Yes
        interfaces = 10.0.0.69/255.255.255.0
        encrypt passwords = true
        wins support = true
        netbios name = SERVER
        server string = GNU/Linux File Server
        invalid users = root
        workgroup = Debian
        os level = 20
        security = share
        read raw = Yes
        write raw = Yes
and here is the guest directories
Code:
[clips]
        comment = clips
        path = /hdc3/home/samba/clips

[movies]
        comment = movies
        path = /hdc3/home/samba/movies
you can check with
Code:
# testparm
is everything O.K. in the config file
Using smbpasswd isn't required.

edit: I ran Samba server for shares without any usernames/password

Hi, I have the same problem, I dont see the computer in the 'computers near me' folder

Here is my [global]

[global]
workgroup = KAPLOW
netbios name = SAMBASERVER
server string = SambaServer
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
passwd chat = *New*password* %n\n *Retype*new*password* %n\n *passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully*
unix password sync = Yes
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 0
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
printing = cups

I'm not sure what a lot of it does, I'm trying to do this through SWAT

Code:
 [global]
    workgroup = MYGROUP
        hide unreadable = Yes
        socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192
        guest ok = Yes
        domain master = Yes
;       interfaces=192.168.1.105/255.255.255.0
        encrypt passwords = true
        wins support = true
        netbios name = SERVER
        server string = GNU/Linux File Server
        invalid users = root
        os level = 20
        security = share
        read raw = yes
        write raw = yes
[test]
    comment = For testing only, please
    path = /home/mrx/tmp
    read only = no
    guest ok = yes
what should i try next please??

try these directions -- http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba.html. i knew zero about samba when i started tonight, and by following that page to the T, i was able to connect to my linux box in about 10 minutes. i'm guessing it's a very basic config, no password options, etc. but hopefully it will get you up and running.

so hard not to swear...
ok i've read through that nice tutorial, changed my config file 100x times, installed the graphic configuration tool, my services file is correct - but IT STILL WON'T WORK!!!

i'm just so frustrated. could this be window's fault? i mean my settings mirrored each working example people have posted. if i knew how to uninstall stuff in linux i'd just start over.

anyone else have an unreasonable amound of difficulty getting this to work?? what could i be doing wrong?? please help!

thanks again,

just take it step by step, and list exactly what you did so someone can know how to help you figure it out.

just a couple of random thoughts from a samba n00b:

+ did you start the nmbd as well as the smbd?
+ did you chmod 0777 the samba temp directory?
+ are you sure the samba package you installed wasn't corrupted?
+ does your /etc/services file have the required definitions? (edit: oops, sorry, i see you checked that)

>edit 2: did you run testparm? what did it say?

all that stuff you listed checked out (except maybe the install was corrupted i don't know) so synaptical that's a good idea to list my steps - > sooo i've removed samba completely from my system and have started over

i've now installed samba from the redhat 9 disk and updated it so i have:
samba-client-2.2.7a-8.9.0
redhat-config-samba-1.0.4-1
samba-2.2.7a-8.9.0
samba-common-2.2.7a-8.9.0

i chmoded the /tmp folder with 0777, added that folder to the list in the samba server manager, then started smbd & nmbd services using the services manager.

the command: smbclient -U% -L localhost gives me:
Code:
added interface ip=192.168.1.105 bcast=192.168.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Domain=[MYGROUP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.2.7a-security-rollup-fix]

        Sharename      Type      Comment
        ---------      ----      -------
        tmp            Disk      testing tmp
        IPC$ IPC IPC Service (da samba server)
        ADMIN$ Disk IPC Service (da samba server)

        Server               Comment
        ---------            -------
        POKEY                da samba server

        Workgroup            Master
        ---------            -------
        MYGROUP          POKEY
testparm gives me all OK's. and the dump is:
Code:
# Global parameters
[global]
        coding system =
