Need help with grub> please

I have Mepis 3.3.2 and have just loaded it onto a second computer which is a Pentium2 450

Everything seemed to go smoothly. I only have one hard drive and I opted to 'take it all' and them, later in the installation I took the default (MBR) to load 'grub' to that hard drive.

When it wanted to 'reboot without the CD', it seemed to me that it did not eject the CD as soon as I expected.

Anyway, I'm now to the screen with 'grub>' and have no idea what to do, since me first machine just goes ahead and loads the program.

I would appreciate it if someone would tell me either, what I should do next? OR whether this is an indication that I have screwed something up?

Thanks.

Lewis.

erm, no sounding good from what I know (very little)

I presume the cd is out?

Try hitting "esc" and see if that gives you anything?

is not your gonna have to (well you don't have to but its fun) write the menu.lst from grub itself

Does your install CD give you a rescue mode or similar? See if you can get into the new installation and look at /boot/grub/menu.lst If you find it, tell us what'
s there (not all the #...... comment lines)

It would seem to me that s/he doesn't have a menu.lst seen as that is the grub command prompt. from there it is possible to do some basic bash stuff, not sure about editing files tho...
Code:
ls /boot/grub
should tell us if the files is there or not.

Thanks for your suggestions.

After re-installing a few more times, I changed out the hard drive, re-installed again and it is working properly now, so I guess it was a faulty hard drive that caused the problem.

I liked this, " s/he ". Thats certainly PC these days.

Kind regards.

Lewis.

yeh, that would seem to me that the first part of grub (in the MBR) loaded but couldn't find the menu.lst file where it *should* be 'cos the drive had moved.
