Need help with a Home Media Servr

I am a newbie to Linux. I would like to build a Home Media Server. I have tried Ubuntu 11.04. I can get software loaded but can not get webmin to work to finish my server build. I have a Dell Preformance 470 with 4 gig of ram and 1.5 TB of storage. Is there another version I should use to build my Home Server with a GUI interface? I am up for a challenge since an IT frriend of mine told me it would be a challenge. Hopefully this server will also backup other pc's in my home.
